Humility, Gratitude, and Courage at Thanksgiving

November 19th, 2025 by Jim Knight

Each Thanksgiving, I return to Arnold Friberg’s iconic painting, GeorgeWashington at Valley Forge. It captures, in one extraordinary image, the posture of a leader who understands that courage is born of humility and strength is found in dependence on God. Washington kneels in the snow, head bowed, in a quiet act of prayer that evokes Rembrandt’s Return of the Prodigal Son.

It is a scene of surrender, not weakness, but wisdom: a reminder that true greatness often begins on one’s knees. It is incredible how art communicates essential truths about human flourishing, and these two pieces evoke a true sense of what it means to think and live well.

The Posture of a Grateful Heart

In a culture that prizes independence and self-creation, Washington’s posture feels almost radical. Yet it reflects the very virtues we seek to form in our students at Pacifica: courage rooted in faith, confidence shaped by humility, and gratitude that gives rise to wisdom.

Friberg’s painting reminds us that strength comes not from self-reliance, but from submission to God, the ultimate source of truth, guidance, and hope.

“True greatness often begins on one’s knees.”

Looking Back and Giving Thanks

We are part of a larger story. One that existed before us and one that will continue after we are gone. We are the recipients of a legacy, of faith, perseverance, and virtue, passed down by those who came before us. Like Washington in that winter forest, we are called to pause, to seek God’s wisdom, and to give thanks for His enduring presence through every season.

In the painting, light pierces the cold gray woods and rests upon Washington in prayer. That light is the symbol of hope, that even in our most uncertain moments, God’s grace breaks through, illuminating the path ahead.

A Thanksgiving Benediction

As we gather this Thanksgiving, may we, students, parents, faculty, and friends, adopt that same posture: humble before God, courageous in purpose, and grateful for the blessings that sustain our community.

I am profoundly grateful to serve a school that embodies faith, hope, and courage at its core. Let's continue to live with gratitude, seek wisdom, and pursue a flourishing life of meaning, purpose, and virtue.
