Max Preps Victory for Boys’ Varsity Basketball

January 3, 2017 | by Casi Ticer

boysOur Boys’ Varsity Basketball team competed last weekend at the Max Preps Palm Springs Tournament and completely dominated the tournament.

Though they played the tournament down a few varsity players, they won the tournament and walked away with several honors. Senior Beker Baerwald was named MVP of the tournament. Coach Kelsey won the Coach’s Award. Sophomore Rocmon Stallworth and Junior Luca Gaudio were named to the All-Tournament Team.

The tournament started with a 76 – 38 victory against Joshua Springs with Beker Baerwald scoring a career high of 39 points.

The second night of the tournament our boys beat Shadow Hills 65 – 63, a public high school with over 2,300 students. They moved onto Coachella Valley High School, beating them 59 -54. Luca Gaudio scored 16 points and Beker Baerwald scored 15.

The final game was impressive, beating Desert Christian Academy, 86 – 67. Desert Christian had four players 6’5 or taller and was ranked 7th in the CIF division above us. Coach Kelsey is incredibly proud of our gutsy and hardworking players. “Our team played lock down defense and had to repeatedly respond to deeper and larger teams as they went undefeated in pool play. Then, going against Desert Christian Academy in the championship game, which has four players 6’5″ and larger, the team had to dig deep and depend on scoring by fast breaking.” It paid off.
